To celebrate Clive Smith turning 79, we take a look back at one of Kauto Star’s finest moments – in the 2007 Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Trained by the fantastic Paul Nicholls, the gelding had stormed clear of his rivals in the Betfair Chase and the King George at Haydock and Kempton over the winter months.
The chasing star was making a tilt at the newly-formed Stayers Chase Triple Crown, which would bag his owners £1million in prize money should he land the 3m2f Grade 1 feature race at Prestbury Park.
The then seven-year-old was held up at the back of the pack for most of the contest, but he began to make headway at four out.
The gelding quickened up at two out and the roar of the Cheltenham crowd was deafening as he pushed into the lead.
Punters took a sharp intake of breath when he tanked through the final fence, but he regained his footing and powered towards the finish, claiming success by two and a half lengths.
Kauto Star is currently the only horse to win the Stayers Chase Triple Crown since its inception, and it will take a truly special runner to claim the accolade alongside him.
