To celebrate Sarah Such turning 52, today’s rewind takes a look back at one of her biggest successes as an owner – with her beloved The New One in the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival back in 2013.
The then five-year-old had won six of his first eight career starts, with two of those victories coming at Prestbury Park.
The gelding went off as the second favourite for the Grade 1 2m5f contest, behind Willie Mullins’ much-fancied Pont Alexandre.
Trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies and with son Sam in the saddle, The New One tracked the leaders for the majority of the contest before making his move with two fences remaining.
Travelling through the bend towards home, the son of King’s Theatre began to make strong headway and found himself in front at the final hurdle.
He powered down the home straight and left his rivals in the dust, claiming success by four lengths.
The New One would go on to claim 13 more successes in his career, including a hat-trick of International Hurdle victories.
The gelding sadly passed away last year at the age of 12 following a bout of colic.
