To celebrate owner Trevor Hemmings turning 86, today’s rewind takes a look back at Vintage Clouds claiming success in the Ultima Handicap Chase at the 2021 Cheltenham Festival.

Trained by Sue Smith, the gelding was making his fifth appearance in the contest and was priced up at the large odds of 28/1.

The gelding pushed in front at the 10th fence and didn’t look back, plugging on gamely under Ryan Mania.

The 11-year-old remained in front on the home turn, but he was being challenged by Happygolucky and Aye Right.

But Smith’s veteran fended off the two well-backed contenders, pulling clear of his rivals in the run-in.

Vintage Clouds, who was tipped up for this contest in our Cheltenham Festival Value Picks, went to win by five and a half lengths in the famous Hemmings yellow and lime green silks.

It was hoped the gelding would race in the Scottish Grand National or the Sandown Gold Cup, but he did not feature in either contest.

DID YOU KNOW? Vintage Clouds was the oldest runner to win the Ultima since 11-year-old Flyer’s Nap claimed success in 1997.
