To mark joint-owner Simon Such turning 56, we take a look back at one of The New One’s finest moments over hurdles – in the International Hurdle at Cheltenham back in 2016.

The then eight-year-old had already claimed two successes in the contest as in many starts for Nigel Twiston-Davies, cruising to victory in 2013 and 2014.

Going off as the 13/8 favourite, the gelding faced long-time rival My Tent Or Yours from Nicky Henderson’s yard who was the second favourite at odds of 7/4.

The New One took the lead from the off, dictating the pace from the front as he cruised through the opening stages.

Making the turn into the home straight, he kicked on from his rivals down the hill with only My Tent Or Yours keeping tabs on the gelding.

He flew over the last hurdle and bolted down the straight, running on strongly to win by three and a half lengths.

The New One would land one more Graded success, in the Champion Hurdle Trial at Haydock in January 2018, before being retired in the 2018/19 season.

He sadly passed away following a bout of colic in October 2020.
