SAMCRO: Two-time Cheltenham Festival hero set for Listowel reappearance

Former duel Cheltenham Festival hero Samcro tops the market for this afternoon’s John J. Galvin Chase at Listowel, making his 21st racecourse reappearance for Gigginstown House Stud.

Denise Foster’s charge took the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle in 2018 and Marsh Novices’ Chase in 2020, respectively, currently holding a tally of 11 victories for connections which included an undefeated career start extending to eight.

The 160-rated chaser endured a difficult 2020/21 campaign, completing only one of his three starts, but got back on track at Killarney last month for Jack Kennedy, now partnering 3lbs claimer Barry Browne.

There was talk of a possible tilt at the Galway Plate later this summer, but Cullentra stalwart Jamie Codd deemed that path unlikely.

He told the Paddock Picks Podcast: “I’m not so sure [if he’ll run]. It’s a real helter-skelter of a competitive handicap, and he’ll obviously have close to top-weight.

“There’s plenty of prizes there that he could pick up but I’m not sure where he’ll end up. It was great to see him back [at Killarney].

“It was disappointed that he was mapped at Cheltenham but he got the job done the other day and he’ll probably kick on over the nice ground through the summer.”
